This was the primary water source inside the walls of Salem, the Canaanite mountain fortress called Jebusi. While the water supported life inside the walls and irrigated crops in the Kidron Valley to the east, it is likely the spring’s outlet provided access to King David’s officer Joab and facilitated the city’s capture. David made the fortress his capital, renaming it the City of David.
