Jewish Museum in Prague is the 3rd oldest museum of its kind in the world, taking care of one the largest collections of Judaica in the world. Established in 1906, it celebrates its 120th Jubilee in 2026.

I had the pleasure to visit the famous Prague Jewish Museum on Holocaust Memorial Day. It was rewarding to see long lines of visitors waiting to get in, and even more so to note the majority were not Jewish. Indeed, in these days of increasing antisemitism the importance of spreading an educational experience about the plight of the Jewish people has gained critical significance. Escorted by our elegant and charming hostess and a leading light of this museum, Martina Kemrová, it turned into a memorable and enlightened visit. Jewish TV Channel urges our community to both visit the wonderful city of Prague, and to make sure a visit to this museum spread over multiple locations, is a priority!

David Bannister – Founder of Jewish TV Channel

Brief history:

1906 – 1939 It was founded in 1906 by the Jewish Community in Prague. The impulse to its foundation was so called Prague sanitation – a massive demolition and rebuilding in the historical part of Prague which influenced mainly the area of the former ghetto, Josefov aka 5th Quarter. Around 600 buildings were demolished between 1895 – 1942, including synagogues, yeshivas and houses of prayer. The founders – namely the historian Salomon Hugo Lieben and the representative of the Czech-Jewish movement and city councilor August Stein – wanted to establish a place to keep all the liturgical objects and sacred texts from the demolished buildings.

At the beginning, the museum started in a very modest way, the first exhibition was opened in 1909. The former Ceremonial Hall of the Burial Society in the world-wide known Old Jewish Cemetery became the first museum building.

1939 – 1945 The Jewish Museum Association was abolished in autumn 1939 following the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Its collection was taken over by the Prague Jewish community, which—thanks to an initiative by Karel Stein, head of the department for rural affairs—led to the founding of the Central Jewish Museum in 1942. The Nazis approved the project after lengthy negotiations, although their intentions differed significantly from those of the founders.

Under the guise of a “museum,” the institution became a refuge for liturgical objects, books, and archival documents from Jewish communities that had been dissolved. Thanks to the efforts of art historian and chief curator Josef Polák and his colleagues, the museum operated professionally and laid the foundation for the present-day Jewish Museum in Prague.

1945 – 1948 After the war, the museum was placed under national administration. The conditions imposed by the state prevented the Council of Jewish Religious Communities in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia—legal successor to the disbanded communities—from taking effective control before the Communist coup in February 1948.

1950 –1994 In 1950, the museum was nationalized along with its extensive collections. Its activities were shaped by ideological pressure, which restricted the range of permissible topics and how they could be presented. The Communist regime also hindered the development of specialized research.

1994 – … Research activities resumed only in 1994, when the museum’s buildings were returned to the Prague Jewish community and most of its collections were transferred back to the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic. On 1 October 1994, the museum regained its independence, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its more than hundred-year history.

The JMP is a non-state, non-profit organization. Since 2022, the institution is led by Director Pavla Niklová.

JMP in numbers

The JMP is one of the most visited touristic targets in Prague and CZ. Yearly, approx. 600,000 visitors from around the globe visit its premises.

At present, the visitors can visit 4 synagogues (Pinkas, Maisel, Spanish and Old-New synagogues) and the Old Jewish Cemetery. Other 3 venues (Klausen synagogue, Ceremonial Hall and Artchul Gallery) have been reconstructed. The Pinkas synagogue serves as a powerful shoah memorial with 80,000 names of victims form Czech lands written on its walls.

The museum offers also wide range of educational and cultural programs, mainly targeted on Czech public, but also enabling the space for intercultural discussions.

Why to visit the Jewish Museum in Prague in 2026?

The year of the Museum´s 120th anniversary is approaching, and the program is already taking shape. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come:

Most observant Jews are confused when they see the news of an Orthodox-ordained Rabbi celebrating LGBTQ self-identifying individuals. Some may begin to wonder about the truth of Torah. If the Torah is demanding the impossible of a person in this situation, where else might the Torah be demanding the impossible? What else might soon be minimized or dismissed by respected voices? What does such widespread celebration mean for our respect for traditional marriage?

Those who are concerned should know that a movement is emerging which is successfully and directly confronting that challenge and bringing needed clarity on the LGBTQ issue with clear Torah and scientific principles.

First of all, despite claims to the contrary, there is no hard evidence that anyone is “born this way.” However, there is plenty of evidence of the impact of the LGBTQ community in convincing people they are. They are being told by the LGBTQ world that they do not have free will to make the choices they might wish to make and that anyone who disagrees is homophobic.

We are living in a most challenging cultural environment in the West. In the US, thirty percent of young women age 18-27 are now self-identifying as somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum, when that was once a negligible percentage. In the Ivy League schools thirty to fifty percent of all students are so identifying. The less observant Jewish world has embraced and celebrates LGBTQ culture. Americans fund organizations in Israel that support and influence Israeli culture to be LGBTQ supportive.

Within the observant Jewish world there are now a number of ordained Rabbis who are celebrating with the LGBTQ community. One liberal yeshivah’s clergy, following organization policy, are officiating at lesbian marriage ceremonies. Even within the haredi world there is confusion. The head of one of the leading counseling schools and seminaries in Israel states that some people are just born this way and there is nothing to be done. But Torah truth is emerging and the tide is turning.

There are a number of clear signs that Torah and scientific clarity are returning. It certainly helps that the current US administration is pushing back against DEI. Those impacts are felt across the globe. In the observant Jewish world, positive steps are underway and some would, like to change the meaning of the acronym, LGBT, to Life Grounded in Biblical Teaching.

Chabad has been and continues to be a steadfast leader in providing clarity. There is a letter on the matter from the Rebbe where he cites the Rambam – who says “it is entirely a matter of will and determination.“ The Rebbe says that the basic principle of free will is violated by people who think they are born this way and can’t change. The Rebbe goes on to use the example of a person who is tempted to steal. He points out that we certainly don’t encourage a kleptomaniac because we obviously don’t encourage a person along those desires and tendencies. (paraphrasing) So why would we encourage a person’s homosexual behavior? He notes that Hashem has given a person powers to overcome the difficulty, “no matter how extraordinary.” Chabad Rabbi and relationship expert, Manis Friedman has an explanatory line in one of his videos on the topic of same sex attraction, “if people weren’t tempted to do sexual activities that were prohibited, there would be no reason for boundaries in the Torah.”

Those who feel they cannot overcome the tendency despite help, must live lives of self control, as Rabbi Feldman of Ner Yisrael and Rabbi Meidan of Har Etzion have said, no matter how difficult.

What is available?

The Jewish Family Forever organization has been teaching hundreds of Rabbis, teachers and therapists how to discuss same sex attraction from a Torah and scientific perspective including the challenges if a person self-identifies by their current sexual desire. Jewish Family Forever’s mission is to empower individuals in making free choices, devoid of fixed labels, which can give them the tools and confidence they need to pursue traditional heterosexual marriage and live in accordance with their own Jewish values.” (from the Jewish Family Forever website)

Rabbi Yitzchak Breitowitz, senior lecturer at Yeshivas Ohr Somayach and Rav of Kehillat Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem and formerly the Rabbi of the Woodside Synagogue in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Professor of Law at the University of Maryland Law School is the Rabbinic Advisor to Jewish Family Forever. He has given numerous lectures on the foundational importance of the traditional family and he is as clear as the Rebbe in his approach to the challenge. He encourages those who need help to seek counseling from those who have Torah and scientific clarity.

One of his main go-to counselors is Dr. Koby Frances who is also the education consultant to Jewish Family Forever. Dr. Frances’s webinars and teaching programs have had hundreds of participants including Rabbis, teachers, therapists, and counselors. His latest videos which were featured on the Yiboneh organization’s website and have had over 12,000 views with hundreds of positive responses.

There is more. One of the largest seminaries in Israel is preparing their incoming students upfront for the current cultural wave which they are experiencing using both Dr. Frances’s and other materials.

In Israel, there are quite a number of organizations working in support of the traditional family structure and educating for clarity. Choosing Family or Boharim BaMishpacha, is a branch of Hotam. This organization under the direction of Rabbi Michael Foa, serves to remind the State of Israel not to retreat from traditional Jewish values formally adopted by the State’s founders in official legislation. They are both educating their members as well as working with the government to influence traditional family friendly policies. They are working closely with a number of Knesset members who champion their issues.

Israel Family Institute and the organization, Hosen, provide direct counseling services as well as training counselors with these concepts. They provide counseling for those who are seeking a traditional path in life.

In addition, Shovrot Shivion, a religious women’s organization, is working to support the traditional family structure and educate its members.

None of this has anything to do with “conversion therapy.”

Rabbis and counselors across the globe are awakening. No physical, DNA or chemical evidence has been found as a cause of a sexual identity. The overwhelming evidence points to cultural influences as the cause of a person’s self-identification. Once a person self-labels themselves as LGBTQ, it is more difficult for them to find their way back to a traditional path. It creates an identity trap in which a person doesn’t believe they have free will.

Rabbis and counselors are also helping willing clients potentially look at contributing factors. A person who so desires can learn to manage these factors and pursue a traditional marriage leading to a traditional family.
JNS Staff

(JNS)

Israeli archaeologists have uncovered a Byzantine-era treasure of nearly 100 gold coins and earrings near the Sea of Galilee, the University of Haifa announced on Thursday.

The hoard, unearthed in July during excavations at the ancient city of Hippos (Sussita) and dating to the 6th century CE, was discovered when a metal detector operator with the dig picked up a signal near a large stone at the site.

As the stone shifted between two walls, the signal grew stronger and gold coins began to emerge one after another.

“The device went crazy. I couldn’t believe it—gold coins started appearing one after another,” said Edie Lipsman, the metal detector operator.

The find includes 97 pure gold coins and dozens of fragments of gold earrings inlaid with pearls, semi-precious stones and glass, the university said.

“This is one of the largest hoards from the Byzantine period discovered on dry land in Israel, and its uniqueness lies in the combination of jewelry and gold coins from the reigns of different emperors,” said University of Haifa expedition co-director Michael Eisenberg. “In addition, remnants of fabric were found on some of the coins—a trace of the cloth pouch in which the hoard had been hidden.”

The coins date from the reign of Emperor Justin I (518–527 CE) to the early years of Emperor Heraclius (610–613 CE).

Founded by the Greek Seleucids on a hill about a mile east of the Sea of Galilee, the city of Hippos was a major Christian center and episcopal seat during the Byzantine period (330–636 CE), with at least seven active churches.

Fearing for their safety during the Arab conquest of 614 CE, residents of many Christian cities, including Hippos, hid valuables in the hope of recovering them after the fighting.

Although Hippos survived the Arab invasion, a devastating earthquake in 749 CE destroyed the city, which was subsequently abandoned.

“Gold is a noble metal, and when you find coins and jewelry nearly 1,400 years old that look new, it is a rare experience,” Eisenberg said.

(JNS)

The Hind Rajab Foundation, an anti-Israel legal group based in Brussels, filed a formal complaint to Germany’s federal prosecutor general alleging that Elkana Federman is guilty of “war crimes” and calling for the security guard at the Nova festival to be arrested.

Federman helped evacuate wounded people during the Hamas-led terrorist attacks on Oct. 7, 2023, used a fallen Israeli soldier’s rifle to return fire until he ran out of ammunition, was shot in the leg and hid in a thicket until he was rescued.

The security guard was in Berlin, where he served as a panelist at an event on “heroes of Oct. 7.”

The anti-Israel group said Federman, who was part of an Israeli protest against aid trucks entering Gaza amid the war, during which Hamas looted such aid, “actively participated in preventing food and medicine from reaching civilians.”

The complaint invoked a German law that holds the “perpetrators of human rights violations accountable, irrespective of where the crime was committed and whether the act has any relation to the country in question.”

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is offering full scholarships in any field of study to all released hostages, the school announced on Sunday.

The university is offering full scholarships for a three-year academic degree—covering both bachelor’s and master’s programs—to all captives freed from Gaza, along with a dedicated fund to ensure children who were held hostage can access higher education in the future.

A bachelor’s degree in Israel normally requires three years of full-time study.

The initiative includes personalized academic guidance, psychological support, and career counseling, aiming to provide a foundation for their recovery and reintegration. The program is designed to serve as a cornerstone for these individuals’ return to normalcy, equipping them with the tools to achieve their personal and professional aspirations.

“We are committed to standing by all who experienced the horrors of October 7 and the prolonged captivity under Hamas. It is our responsibility to support them in every way possible,” said Professor Tamir Sheafer, rector of the Hebrew University.

“We aim to help them rebuild a hopeful future and provide a solid anchor in their long rehabilitation journey. As Israel’s leading academic institution, we believe in the transformative power of higher education and its potential to drive personal and societal change. This initiative reflects our deep ethical and social commitment,” Sheafer said.

The Hamas rampage against unarmed civilians revealed to Israelis just how exposed they are to attack once the country’s first line of defense is breached. It has awakened a once indifferent public to the need to take up arms.

Demand has been such that a Knesset command center was set up to handle the flood of applications last Tuesday.

“There are now over 120,000 requests for the Firearms Division. Please be patient and the division representatives will get back to everyone,” Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir tweeted last week.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a national address on Wednesday, “We’re encouraging citizens, and helping citizens, to arm themselves with personal weapons for defense.”

On Oct. 16, the National Security Committee approved regulations expanding the criteria for obtaining a gun license. Previously, the two main criteria were IDF service and “place of residence” (whether a citizen lives in what is considered a dangerous area). Both criteria, along with lesser ones affecting fewer people, have been redefined to allow more citizens to qualify.

Since becoming National Security Minister in Dec. 2022, Ben-Gvir has pushed to put more guns into the hands of average citizens. It had been an uphill battle due to public inertia. While Israel is no stranger to terrorism, calls for more guns have failed to garner widespread public support.

The scale and savagery of Hamas’s attack changed that.

“Before this disaster, people in Israel didn’t really understand why they needed personal weapons,” said Raz Blizovsky, who founded The Project for Civil Security, a pro-gun group, in the wake of the Hamas attack.

“Now, after what happened in the Gaza Strip, people understand,” he told JNS.

While Israel has a citizens’ army, it does not have an armed citizenry. Only about 150,000 Israelis, or 2% of the population, are legal gun owners, compared to 30% in the United States. And unlike in America, where gun ownership is linked to individual freedom, there’s nothing like a gun culture.

Gun owners who don’t have a clear reason for owning a firearm are viewed askance. There are virtually no hunters. Sport shooting exists, but enthusiasts are largely citizens of former Soviet states. As a Russian Knesset hopeful once explained to a pro-gun group, “We Russians understand what it means when citizens don’t have guns.”

In place of a Second Amendment, Israel has the aforementioned criteria, of which there are about two dozen. A citizen must meet at least one to qualify for a permit. Moreover, criteria have in the past been canceled at the whim of the public security minister. In one case, 5,000 people lost their license in one go. They could no longer own the guns they had legally purchased.

Blizovsky, a father of five, owns a consulting firm that helps companies run social media campaigns. He decided to do what he does best—run a campaign—only this time to get guns in the hands of citizens.

Once he understood a change had taken place, he realized decision-makers needed to see that change. He started a petition for personal firearms. Over 11,000 signed on in less than three weeks.

“I made sure that as many people as possible would join and express an opinion on social networks. I recruited lots of people, to whom I explained that you should say what you think because the way to get what you want is simply to say it, and in as many places as possible,” said Blizovsky.

Blizovsky applied for a license more than a year ago. Although he never served in the Israeli military, as a resident of Katzrin in the Golan Heights, he qualifies under the “place of residence” criterion. He is still waiting for his license. The bureaucracy is secretive. He can’t say where exactly he is in the process, other than “midway.” There are no notifications or updates.

The burdensome bureaucracy prevents people from trying for a license in the first place. Another resident of Katzrin, Josh Plank, a father of eight, admits he hasn’t bothered because he found the process daunting. A relatively new immigrant from the United States, Plank has been familiar with firearms since childhood. When he lived in Phoenix, he once held a home invader at gunpoint for nearly an hour until police arrived.

“I cornered him in the laundry room just inches from my baby daughter’s crib,” he said. “Whatever he had planned, he gave it up pretty quickly, accepted the situation, and asked if he could at least have a smoke. The answer was no.”

“I originally hail from Indiana. Having a gun wasn’t a big deal. Trying to get one here is a nightmare. Whoever heard of going through such hoops for a peashooter,” said Plank, who in the States preferred a .45 Colt revolver to the more popular 9 millimeter semi-automatics.

“The system’s designed to keep you from protecting your family, not to mention your neighborhood. It’s the very opposite of the American attitude. Here, they force you to rely on the government. And the fact is it can’t always be relied upon. Just look at what happened down by Gaza,” he said.

Despite his criticism, Plank says he would never consider returning to the United States. “We may be surrounded by heavily armed savages who would love to massacre every one of us, but the people of Israel have a God. I guess I like those odds,” he said.

Plank said that both he and his wife had now applied for a gun license.(Ben-Gvir is encouraging women to apply as well.) “We hope it’ll be easier, that there’s been a change in the mindset after what happened,” said Plank.

According to Blizovsky, the difference in attitudes on firearms between Israel and the United States is a philosophical question. He also cited the media as a factor. In Israel, the press will never say in response to an attack, “If only the citizen had a gun,” he said. Instead, they will say, “If only the police got there sooner.”

However, Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack may have changed minds in the media, too. A report about one heroic defender that aired on Israel’s public broadcasting network was a sharp break from what came before. It focused on one man, a member of an elite police unit, who managed to fend off Hamas terrorists armed with automatic machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades with nothing but a Glock handgun, (He estimated that he killed 10 to 14). He saved himself, his wife and child.

Prominently displayed in the foreground during the interview was his pistol. The pro-gun message, so unusual for a mainstream Israeli station, was impossible to miss—that even a small firearm can be the difference between life and death, even against seemingly impossible odds.

According to Blizovsky, who decided to get a gun after the May 2021 Israeli Arab riots, the absurdities of Israel’s current system extend beyond bureaucracy. He noted that while Katzrin is an “eligible residence,” Sderot, which borders the Gaza Strip and where dozens were killed on Oct. 7, was not. (Ben-Gvir has since added Sderot, along with Ofakim and Netivot, two communities also badly hit in the attack.)

Blizovsky also said that many Israeli communities are calling for the formation of new “standby squads.” (Netanyahu said 600 such squads have already been established, with more on the way.) Standby squads are made up of local residents, usually former military, who train together and are qualified to use automatic rifles. They serve as first-response defense teams, holding down the fort until regular troops arrive. At least two kibbutzim in southern Israel were saved on Oct. 7 because of such squads.

However, these teams are typically made up of people who are the first to head for the front in case of emergency, leaving their communities undefended. For example, the head of the Yesha Council sent an urgent letter to the prime minister on Oct. 25 demanding security be restored after the “mobilization of members of the standby squads by ‘Order 8’ [the emergency Israel Defense Forces call-up notice] and the lack of combat equipment.”

“You need as many people as possible. There will always be a reason why this or that person isn’t available. Decentralization is the name of the game. That’s what will win,” said Blizovsky.

Blizovsky’s group advocates attaching new gun owners to the volunteer police force. Israel’s police already use volunteers extensively so the system is in place, he said. Blizovsky’s innovation is that new volunteers won’t be required to commit to a certain number of hours or days as is the case now. To do so would only discourage people from participating, he said. But under his scheme, new gun owners will be trained and become familiar with the police system so they can be called on in case of emergency. He is convinced citizens will respond in times of crisis.

(JNS)

On Sept. 13, 1995, Yad Vashem recognized Józef and Wiktoria Ulma—a Polish couple who hid eight Jews during the Holocaust—as among the Righteous Among the Nations. Now, the Vatican has beatified the Ulmas, as well as their six children and unborn child.

In the Roman Catholic Church, the canonization process by which someone is deemed a saint involves three steps. After beatification—the second step—the person is called “blessed.” To be canonized, someone must have performed a verified miracle.

Marcello Cardinal Semeraro, a papal envoy, said the Polish family performed a “gesture of hospitality and care, of mercy” and “paid the highest price of martyrdom,” the Associated Press reported. The Ulmas “represented a ray of light in the darkness,” Pope Francis said in a public address.

“On the night of March 23-24, 1944, German police came to Markowa from Łańcut. They found the Jews on the Ulma farm and shot them to death,” Yad Vashem states. “Afterwards, they murdered the entire Ulma family—Józef, Wiktoria, who was nine months pregnant, and their six small children, Stanisława, Barbara, Władysława, Franciszka, Maria and Antoni.”

Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki attended the beatification ceremony, as did Chabad Rabbi Michael Schudrich, chief rabbi of Poland.

Steve Rubin, director of Tourism in the Jerusalem Development Authority, tells JNS about the city’s summer campaign to attract visitors.

Steve Linde

(JNS)

According to Steve Rubin, director of Tourism in the Jerusalem Development Authority, Jerusalem is not only the capital and most populous city in Israel as well as being holy to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. As the current war passed the 21-month mark, Jerusalem is also starting to bounce back as “a world leader in tourism and most certainly as the epicenter of culture in Israel,” he said.

In an interview in the JNS Studio in Jerusalem on July 7, Rubin said, “Since October 7 [2023], Jerusalem has become probably the safest city to be in Israel,” adding with a smile, “This is actually the best time to come to Jerusalem.”

Rubin, an affable and articulate American immigrant, is responsible for overseeing and promoting Jerusalem’s development as an international tourism hub. Born in Philadelphia, he made aliyah and served as a lone soldier in the 2006 Second Lebanon War and has served five stints as an IDF reservist in the current war. He has a master’s in Diplomacy from Tel Aviv University and a BA in Journalism and Spanish from the University of Oregon.

Exuding faith in the future of Jerusalem and the Jewish state, he called this moment in history, “a time of optimism as we move into the summer and what we believe is really going to be a time for new beginnings.”

The Jerusalem Development Authority (JDA), he explained, “is a joint body of the Israeli government and the Jerusalem municipality responsible basically for all economic development in the city of Jerusalem,” adding that this covers everything from starting new businesses, hi-tech and biomed companies to urban renewal projects and tourism.”My job … is to worry about bringing up the economic side of tourism within the city.”

Promoting the city’s “great summer campaign” to attract visitors from Israel and abroad, he called a vacation in Jerusalem “very economical and cost-effective for people,” especially at a time when prices in cities such as Tel Aviv and Eilat were skyrocketing.

He quipped, “We’re actually handing out money for people to come into the city of Jerusalem. And obviously, when you hear that from Israelis, people get very skeptical sometimes. We’re passing out cash for you to come, with your significant other, your extended family, into the city and enjoy the hundreds of museums and attractions that we have here.”

Rubin elaborated on the city’s tourism incentive plan. “Basically, it’s very simple. You come for two nights in the middle of the week, so Sunday through Wednesday, book two nights at a range of hotels that we’ve been working with. And based on that, every person on your reservation will get 100 shekels on our behalf, okay, given to you as part of a digital wallet. So if you’re a family of five people, let’s say, and you stay for two nights during the summer in the middle of the week in Jerusalem, you would get 500 shekels to be used at any dozens of different attractions and museums, cultural institutions within the city.”

Among the highlights of this campaign, he touted the Jerusalem Food Festival and Light Show on the Armon Hanatziv Promenade (also known as the Haas Promenade or the Tayelet), which features a series of local restaurants’ food trucks and a laser show. It runs until July 24.

“This has been a big hit over the years,” Rubin said. “Just on Thursday, it attracted almost 10,000 people in a place that has a capacity of only 7,000 on the promenade over at Armon Hanatziv. I would look at it as a festival of different food trucks. You have live music out there and a massive bar. You’re getting top chefs in Jerusalem who are coming and cooking at really affordable prices. We’re talking anywhere between 25 to 45 shekels for a meal.”

The Jerusalem chefs are hosting other chefs from all over Israel, he pointed out. “Not only are we helping chefs here in the city during these difficult times, but we’re also getting other chefs to come in and to promote themselves as well,” he said. “So it’s not just Jerusalem, but we’re spreading the light out into the rest of Israel as well.”

This, he said, was the basis of his “cautious optimism” about the revival in tourism to Jerusalem. “Just to see this kind of large gatherings one day after the other in the city of Jerusalem is really, really wonderful for us.” Among the other summer events coming up in Jerusalem in July, Rubin listed the following main attractions:

The new entrance to the Tower of David Jerusalem, July 2025. In a storied career on stage and film, Gaon starred in a range of high-profile roles, including the heroic role of Yonatan Netanyahu, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s older brother, in the 1977 film, “Mivtza Yonatan” (“Operation Thunderbolt”), which tells the dramatic story of the 1976 Entebbe rescue operation which he led and which claimed his life.

• The 60th anniversary celebrations of the Israel Museum, the largest cultural institution in Israel, featuring what Rubin termed “special exhibitions dedicated to the 60 years of this incredible institution.”

• The Jerusalem Film Festival, which Rubin said the city almost canceled during the Israel-Iran War, is now back on track. It starts on July 17 and features more than 200 films from 50 countries. “You don’t even have to necessarily go to a specific spot, because there’s going to be big trucks with big screens going through the city to the different neighborhoods where you can catch it at your convenience. And if you happen to be in the city, we have regular screenings with pizza and drinks on the lawn at the Cinematheque.”

Rubin remarked that the balmy weather at this time of the year in Jerusalem “is perfect for outdoor events.” And, he noted, “That’s why I’d say we’re being a bit optimistic, just because we have these events going on. They didn’t need to be canceled. They’re going on as scheduled and we’re hoping that that’s what will give us the boost as we move toward the High Holy Days and eventually into the winter season.”

The Main Reading Hall at the National Library of Israel, July 2025. Photo by Rami Cohen.

Another huge tourist attraction in Jerusalem, he said, was the new National Library of Israel, “which seems to be everyone’s first stop.” Among the many events at the NLI are cultural performances and tours of its unique architecture and world-class facilities.

“The architecture is remarkable, one of a kind, the way it plays between darkness and light, modernity and antiquity coming together in Jerusalem. And they have some really wonderful tours. You have more than four million books, right? And you can see how they reach those books. There are these really cool robots that go through these endless rows where the books are and can bring you the book that you need.”

In addition, Rubin said, the library showcases exhibitions of original manuscripts from the original writings of Maimonides and the first Zionist newspapers to the original lines of “Jerusalem of Gold” written by the legendary Jerusalem singer, Naomi Shemer.

Asked if he envisioned Jerusalem returning to the days of record tourism before COVID-19 and the Swords of Iron War (In 2019, Jerusalem was named the world’s fastest-growing tourist destination with almost five million visitors), Rubin said, “Unfortunately, I don’t think this is going to be a situation like Corona, where the whole world was shut down and people were craving just to get out and go anywhere. We’re going to have to do a lot to get people to come back here to build that trust again. But naturally, I do believe that Jerusalem is a prime destination in the world.”

Expressing optimism that Israel’s capital is on the road to a full recovery, he said, “I think things will recover quicker than we expect. But I wouldn’t say that tomorrow, immediately when flights open up on all the foreign carriers, that people are going to be here. We’re hoping that already by wintertime, maybe Passover of 2026 and of course, summer a year from now, that we’ll start to feel and see the Jerusalem that we’re all used to.”

Rubin concluded with an eloquent appeal for Israelis and foreigners, Diaspora Jews and Christian pilgrims, to visit the city. “There’s no place like Jerusalem in the world and it’s not a cliché. And no matter how many times you come back to the city, there’s always some other stone to uncover. Even for us who work in the business, and we’ve been doing it for years, there’s always something new to see in Jerusalem, always something that your eyes haven’t looked at, whether you look up or down, whether you go on the walls of the ancient city and the rooftops or you go underground. There’s always something new to discover in Jerusalem.”

He added, “My message is that Jerusalem is always the place where you’re going to come back. We are waiting for everyone to come back, and we know that you’ll be here soon.”

Etgar Lefkovits

(JNS)

A delegation of 30 senior African Christian leaders from 10 countries across the continent was in Israel this past week on a joint religious and political mission, as Jerusalem increases its faith-based diplomatic outreach to tens of millions of Christian supporters in Africa following the two-year war against Hamas in Gaza.

The visit highlighted anew the growing diplomatic tug-of-war between supporters and opponents of the Jewish state in Africa. While South Africa has emerged as one of the fiercest critics of Israel worldwide, other African countries have pushed back and are now further strengthening ties rooted in a mix of shared interests and faith.

“We have a lot of haters and quite a lot of people who want to push us away, but they have one huge obstacle: they are going against the word of God,” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar told the African Christian leaders in a Thursday evening address in Tel Aviv. “We need counter-pressure on governments to support Israel in the international arena, and as spiritual leaders connected to your communities, you can make a change.”

The delegation included representatives from Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and Uganda and included bishops, pastors and prominent church leaders whose congregations alone encompass millions of followers throughout the continent.

During their five-day visit, the group met with Israel’s President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem, visited Hebron and Shiloh in the biblical heartland of Judea and Samaria and toured the site of the Supernova music festival in the northwestern Negev, which was targeted by Hamas-led terrorists during the Oct. 7, 2023, onslaught.

‘Strategic partners’

“The Christian religious leaders of Africa are strategic partners of the State of Israel,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel, who has spearheaded the diplomatic outreach to the continent with more than half a dozen visits over the last two years.

“The Christian community across Africa is strongly supportive of Israel and serves as a vital force in countering the spread of radical Islam and jihadism. Strengthening our ties with these leaders reinforces Israel’s standing in Africa, founded on deep, shared values that will endure for generations,” she said.

Archbishop Justin Badi Arama from South Sudan said, “Thank you for reviving a vision which has been a bit dormant, as we never took a political side to talk about Israel, only the spiritual side. The vision you have come up with has revived us.”

‘Intellectual terrorism’ against Israel

“There is an environment of intellectual terrorism against Israel in the African Union,” said Father Louison Emerick Bissila Mbila, a Roman Catholic priest and chaplain to the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bemoaning the anti-Israel leadership of Algeria and Djibouti.

“At the same time, people individually in Africa want to come to Israel and pray for Israel. The moment they discover Israel, it will change their minds,” said Bissila Mbila, who is a citizen of the Republic of Congo and the Republic of the Seychelles.

Last year, Israel’s African allies thwarted an attempt by African countries, led by South Africa and Algeria, to strip Israel of its observer status at the 55-member African Union, a title held by other countries such as China, Greece, Kuwait, Mexico, “Palestine,” the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

“For quite a long time, Africa has been preoccupied with struggling to break away from the grip of colonialism,” said Pastor Robert Kayanja, who serves as an adviser to the president of Uganda. “Now the people of Africa are standing up to support Israel in a way we have never seen before.”

“We know Israel stands falsely accused when trying to defend itself against terrorism,” he said. “And all we hear on the news is ‘Gaza, Gaza, Gaza’ and they never talk about the killings of Christians in Africa.”

600 million Christians and 54 UN votes

With 600 million Christians and 54 U.N. votes, including 30 Christian-majority countries, Israel has homed in on the strategic value of religious diplomacy on the continent at a time of international opprobrium over the fallout from the war in Gaza, and continued persecution of Christian in Africa.

“This is the first time that [representatives] of the Church of Africa are starting to meet with the State of Israel and their counterparts in faith to reaffirm our common shared heritage and chart a pathway forward in advancing the interests of our communities,” Bishop Dennis Nthumbi, Africa director of the Washington, D.C.-based Israel Allies Foundation, which organized the event, told JNS. “This is a game-changer.”

Bishop Monday Muyombo of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who is fighting against the boycott of Israel in the United Methodist Church, said it is only a matter of time for change to set in on the continent.

“I am praying that more people will get a chance to come to Israel like us and see for themselves, because what is being portrayed in the media is not accurate,” he said. “As we say, lies come off the elevator whereas the truth comes off the escalator.”
