At the NATO summit, U.S. President Joe Biden announces that a new permanent U.S. military base will be established in Poland – the 5th Army’s Headquarters – which has had a forward command post in the city of Poznan since last year. Poland’s government has long requested such a base.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 member states – 28 European and two North American. The 2022 Madrid summit is an ongoing meeting of the heads of state and heads of government of NATO member and partner countries being held in Madrid, Spain, on 28–30 June 2022.
The United States responded swiftly and very effectively in close cooperation with our NATO Allies to the European security crisis brought about by Russian aggression against Ukraine. US President Joe Biden announced that the United States will establish a permanent military base in Poland. It is the first time the country has done so anywhere on NATO’s eastern flank, which up to now has only had a rotating troop presence.
The time when Putin has shattered peace in Europe and attacked the very tenets of rule-based order, the United States and our allies are stepping up to provide security,” said Biden in Madrid for a NATO summit.
President Biden also announced at the NATO Summit in Madrid the following additional long-term commitments to bolster European security:
In Poland, USA will permanently forward station the V Corps Headquarters Forward Command Post, an Army garrison headquarters, and a field support battalion. These forces – the first permanent U.S. forces on NATO’s Eastern Flank – will improve our command and control capabilities, interoperability with NATO, and management of prepositioned equipment.
In Romania, the United States will position a rotational Brigade Combat Team.
In the Baltic region, the United States will enhance its rotational deployments.
In Spain, the United States is working with the government to increase the number of destroyers stationed at Rota from four to six.
In the United Kingdom, USA is increasing our Fifth Generation Fighter presence.
In Germany, the United States will forward station an air defense artillery brigade headquarters, approximately 625 military personnel.
In Italy, the United States will forward station a short-range air defense battery – totaling approximately 65 personnel.
All of these combat-credible forces and enablers are supported by significant investments in the long-term U.S.A presence in Europe.
