Covid In Tiny Islands

The Pitcairn Islands reports the territory’s first case of COVID-19 during the pandemic. The patient is a Pitcairn Islander who returned from medical treatment abroad. The United States donates nearly 20,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to Kiribati through the COVAX initiative.

The Pitcairn Islands has registered its first coronavirus case after nearly two years of almost complete isolation. The tiny island group of about 40 residents had managed to remain infection-free by completely closing itself off to visitors. One of the island’s residents who left for medical treatment tested positive on their return. The United States is providing 19,890 life-saving doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to Kiribati through the COVAX Facility. This donation is the second tranche of a total of 53,820 Pfizer doses that the United States will deliver to Kiribati to help address its ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
