Twenty-two people are found dead at a tavern in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The cause of their deaths is unclear.
East London is a city on the southeast coast of South Africa in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality of the Eastern Cape province. On 26 June 2022, twenty-two people were found dead at the Enyobeni Tavern, a nightclub in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. During a celebration of Hlanjwa iphepha, a tradition in South Africa that celebrates the end of exams, a stampede occurred at the Enyobeni Tavern. While people were entering the tavern, an anonymous person sprayed pepper spray at the crowd. Victims were found on the floor and on chairs and tables, but with no obvious signs of injury. Police had received a call at around 4 a.m. reporting deaths at the tavern. The victims were aged between eighteen to twenty years. Videos of the venue prior to the disaster show that it was packed with young people, with many appearing to be underage. After emergency services were called, four people were taken to hospital, but the cause of deaths and injuries is unclear and is still being investigated.
